Contented Butterfly Farm was established in 2004 with the introduction of 4 Shetland ewe lambs. The following year, we acquired 3 rams. By 2006, we had our first lambs on the ground. We also brought in 4 Shetland ewes and 1 ram lamb from Indiana in 2006. 2008 brought more sheep to the farm with 2 rams from Michigan, 2 rams from Indiana and 4 ewes from Vermont.
2008 was also the year we purchased our first chicks, Partridge Chanteclers and Barred Hollands. Many breeds came along over the years including a stint with some Indian Runner ducks as well as Cayuga ducks.
Our flock grew with the addition of 4 Finn ewe lambs in 2012. We opted to acquire Finns due to their ability to have many lambs at one time. I believe the world record was 9 lambs from one ewe. The most we ever got was 6 and that was plenty, because with extra lambs comes bottle babies. We cross bred to Shetland rams to help along with our demand for good lamb meat. Our first lambs from them came in 2013. That year, we moved our sheep to a new to us summer grazing pasture and experienced our first canine attack, which led to acquisition of 2 guardian llamas. 2014 we brought in 3 more Shetland ewes and 1 ram lamb from Minnesota.
Finn ram lamb, Howie, came in 2016, with the thought of breeding replacements for our four year old Finn ewes. Our last lambs to be born on the farm were in 2020. One more side effect of Covid-19 was that our abattoir was booked out so we couldn't get any dates scheduled for our sheep destined for little white packages in 2020 or 2021. Needless to say, there's no point in breeding for meat if there's no way to USDA process the meat.
Fruits and vegetables have been grown for sale at local farmers markets from 2009 to 2021. I'm sure we will go back to farmers markets at some time in the future. Keep an eye on either our social media or the Our Products page to see if we add more sales venues.
